Something borrowed by Emily Giffin ( Pictures and excerpt from here)
Something Borrowed tells the story of Rachel, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl---until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend, Darcy, throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy's fiancé.
Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. As the September wedding date nears, Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren't always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness. Something Borrowed is a phenomenal debut novel that will have you laughing, crying, and calling your best friend.
It was an enjoyable book and I totally engrossed from the very first page till the end. I do not condone affairs especially when one is getting married in a few months. But Rachel had me cheering her on for various reasons. For one, she is forever being undermined by ber so-called toxic best friend. Her own best friend, Darcy sees her as a threat. Why they had stayed best friends for so long, I have no idea. I had learnt from experience that its best to let go of any relationship that is toxic and have you feeling negative and down. But I guess its the highs that are hard to let go in any relationship.
One thing that I dun get it is why does Dex suddenly had an affair with Rachel. He was with Darcy for 7 years. 7 effing long years. Maybe he finally had enough of Darcy? I kinda pity and empathize with Dex for ending up with a girl like Darcy. But do you have confidence in a guy who cheated with you? I mean if he cheated on his fiance with you, what makes you think that he wont cheat on you 7 years down the road. He already has a track record for cheating on people, if you get what I mean. And plus, if you have children and they get to an age where they are curious about everything. What are you going to say when they ask 'How did you and dad start?' AWKWARD!!
Although it was wrong of Rachel and Dex to have an affair, I understand the rush of feelings they get when they are together. Is it because its stolen time that it makes the feelings intensified? Or is it real love? And plus the hurt that Rachel felt when Darcy announced that they just had the best sex is understandable.
The conflicting feelings that Rachel is going through is what I imagined I would have if I were in her shoes. I feel that Rachel went through life being led and shadowed by Darcy. Its hard to have confidence when your best friend keep showing you up. But in the book, Rachel also had a moment where she knew she has huge influence over Darcy when Darcy bought the wedding gown that Rachel had chosen. When you think about it, why does someone undermined you? Because they think of you as a threat! So yeah, sheer up when someone undermined you, or when they gossip about you.
I love the way that Dex and Rachel feels when they are together. They were really in love. If they were just looking for a fling, I would have hated them thoroughly to the bone. Its like they willingly inflicted pain on someone that they claimed to care about all for something that is insignificant. But they were really in love. you know what is the best thing that I love about Rachel and Dex in love? That they have no idea when they start to have feelings for each other. I mean its true that Dex wanted to ask Rachel out when they were both in law school. But when did they start loving each other? Love for me has always been elusive, there is no clear line, there is no start or end date. There are no specifics.
I love the feelings that this book gave me. I felt all warm inside and that good things will come to good people.
I rate this book 4/5!
